The Carousel Ballroom was a dance palace in San Francisco, California that hosted many famous concerts in the 1960s:

  • Johnny Cash: Cash performed at the Carousel Ballroom on April 24, 1968, with his new bride June Carter and his band. The concert was recorded by Owsley "Bear" Stanley, who used the recording to improve his sound techniques. The recording is considered a landmark live album and is available to listen to on YouTube.
  • Big Brother and the Holding Company: The band performed at the Carousel Ballroom on June 23, 1968, shortly after recording their hit album Cheap Thrills.
  • The Grateful Dead: The Grateful Dead performed at the Carousel Ballroom.

The Carousel Ballroom is located at the corner of Market and Van Ness in San Francisco. It was owned by a group of Bay Area musicians, including the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and Big Brother and the Holding Company. In 1968, Bill Graham purchased the venue and renamed it the Fillmore West. Graham closed the Fillmore West in 1971 and moved most of his shows to Winterland.
